Malkia Strikers rally Kenyans to pack Kasarani in continental title defence

Fresh from a commanding 3-0 victory over Zambia in their opening match of the 2026 CAVB Women’s African Nations Volleyball Championship, Malkia Strikers head coach Geoffrey Omondi and captain Medina Sande have called on Kenyans to turn up in large numbers at Kasarani Indoor Arena.

Kenya opened its title defence in style on Tuesday evening, sweeping aside Zambia 25-14, 25-9 and 25-11.

Omondi says the home crowd remains a key part of Kenya’s push to retain the continental crown and secure qualification for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.

“Let them continue supporting us. They are our seventh player, like I have said before. We need their support. We are playing at home, and we need to retain this trophy,” said Omondi.

The coach, however, identified defending against slower-paced opponents as an area the team needs to improve after Zambia adopted a different approach from what Kenya had prepared for.

“Our defence for the slower attackers is something we need to work on. The opponents played a bit of a slow game, whereas we trained for a faster game, so at times we kind of got bored. That is something we will rectify moving forward,” Omondi added.

Captain Medina Sande also urged fans to fill the Kasarani stands, saying their support gives the players an extra boost on court.

“We are the African champions, and we expect a packed house. Please come out in large numbers and support us. It makes the job so much easier on the court,” Sande said.

Sande also highlighted the balance between youth and experience in the squad, saying the combination has strengthened Kenya’s chances of successfully defending the title.

“The energy from the younger players is superb, while the senior players bring invaluable experience from previous World Championships and the Olympics. It’s a great mix, and having that extra edge works to our advantage,” she said.

Malkia Strikers will next face Mali in Group A, with victory securing top spot and sending the defending champions into the quarter-finals with maximum momentum.
