According to area residents, the chilling discovery began when they spotted a dog carrying what appeared to be a child's limb. Alarmed, they pursued the animal, hoping to find out where it had come from.
Their search led them into a nearby thicket, where they were met with a strong stench that drew them deeper into the bush.
It was there that they stumbled upon the decomposing remains of two adult women, as well as a human skull suspected to have been at the scene for a much longer period.
Kathiani Sub-county Police Commander George Kashimiri confirmed the incident and urged residents to remain vigilant, particularly of any suspicious vehicles moving through the area, warning that such vehicles could be used to transport bodies.
He dismissed claims circulating among residents that the bodies had been doused in acid, explaining that the state of the remains was due to decomposition accelerated by heat.
The discovery has sent shockwaves through the local community, with many residents fearing that more bodies could still be hidden within the thicket.
They described the incident as bizarre and unsettling, calling on authorities to carry out thorough investigations.
Police have since visited the scene and moved the two bodies, along with the suspected child's remains, to Kathiani Level 4 Hospital mortuary, where postmortem examinations are expected to be conducted.
What has puzzled residents most is the manner in which the bodies were dumped. The location is remote and rarely accessible, suggesting that the act was carefully planned by someone familiar with the terrain.
Some residents have speculated that the killings could be linked to a family dispute, although police have not confirmed any motive as investigations continue.
In a related incident, the body of a middle-aged man, yet to be identified, was discovered dumped in a thicket in the Masokani area, between Kenol and Koma markets in the neighbouring Matungulu Sub-county. Matungulu Sub-county Police Commander Peter Gichohi confirmed the discovery, saying the body has since been moved to Kangundo Hospital mortuary as investigations get underway.
