Mandera East race: Maalim Kullow elders rally behind MP Hussein Weytan as Farah Adow withdraws

A major political realignment is taking shape in Mandera East after parliamentary aspirant Farah Adow withdrew from the 2027 parliamentary race and endorsed incumbent MP Hussein Weytan.

The decision followed a consultative meeting involving elders and leaders from the Maalim Kullow community of the wider Murule clan, aimed at bringing the two aspirants from the same family together and promoting a united political direction ahead of the next General Election.

Speaking during the meeting, Adan Diss Elmi emphasised the importance of unity, noting that political competition should not be allowed to divide a family or community. He welcomed Farah Adow’s decision to step aside and support a common political course.

Omar Borai Hassan described the agreement as an important step towards strengthening unity within the community, stressing that political differences should be handled through dialogue and consultation.

Shueb Adan Ali called for the supporters of both Farah Adow and Hussein Weytan to put their differences aside and work together, saying the focus should now shift towards a shared political agenda.

Sheikh Hassan Abdisalan urged the community to maintain peace and cohesion as the country approaches the 2027 elections, arguing that unity would give the community a stronger voice in political affairs.

Meanwhile, Siyad Issack Hassan welcomed the political understanding, saying the decision demonstrated the value of dialogue and collective consultation in resolving political competition within families and communities.

This decision was agreed and applauded by Maalum Kullow community Elders 

For his part, Mandera East MP Hussein Weytan welcomed Farah Adow’s decision to withdraw from the race and endorse him, describing the development as a significant step towards strengthening unity.

Weytan expressed appreciation to the elders and members of the community who facilitated the consultations, while calling on supporters of both camps to unite behind a common political direction.

The agreement marks a potentially significant shift in the Mandera East political landscape. With Farah Adow now backing the incumbent, supporters of the two camps are expected to consolidate their efforts and campaign together ahead of the 2027 polls.

The political question now is whether the new alliance will translate into a stronger grassroots mobilisation for Hussein Weytan as the race for Mandera East begins to take shape.
