Meru School began their Eastern Region basketball title defence bid on a wrong footing when they went 40-41 to Lukenya School in a pulsating Pool D tie played on Wednesday.

Head coach Paul Muli said his charges put too much pressure on themselves and blamed lack of confidence for their opening loss.

“We had prepared well for the game but the fact that we are the defending champions has put so much pressure on us. We must bounce back in the remaining matches,” Muli said.

His opposite number Jeff Muange attributed sufficient preparations for the victory.

Other teams in the pool D include Muteto Boys and debutants Moi Mbirur.

In the Girls’ category Kirigara outclassed Moi Girls 91-4 in their first Pool C match.
