A section of Eldoret locals in Moi University's main campus have apologized to former Vice Chancellor, Laban Ayiro over his discourteous ouster from office.

In a video circulating on social media dated Monday, September 27, community leader Richard Tarus was seen acknowledging Ayiro as the most effective leader Moi University had witnessed.

Offering a formal apology on behalf of the locals, Tarus expressed regret for not recognizing his merits during his tenure.

“I want to apologize on behalf of the locals to Laban Ayiro. He was the right person to be elected as Moi University’s Vice Chancellor. We ask for forgiveness without any fear,” said Tarus.

Ayiro, initially appointed as acting VC in 2015 by then Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i, faced challenges during his subsequent three-year term.

Opposition from North Rift leaders, including figures like former Elgeyo Marakwet governor Alex Tolgos, MP Oscar Sudi, and Senator Jackson Mandago, contested Ayiro's appointment, advocating for their preferred candidate, Prof. Isaac Kosgey.

Now, in a surprising turn, these same locals are calling for the removal of the current VC, Isaac Kosgey, citing alleged poor management and leadership at the university.

Concerns raised include issues of alcohol and drug abuse within Moi University, with accusations that the current VC has not adequately addressed these issues.

“The Vice chancellor must go home. There is alcohol and drug abuse inside Moi University and the man in charge of leading the University cannot be bothered to snuff out the issue,” a local said.

After leaving Moi University, Ayiro assumed the position of VC at Daystar University in 2019.

Additionally, Ayiro was honored with the Best Vice Chancellor in Kenya award at the Uongozi Awards on November 24.

He shared his gratitude on Facebook, as well as Daystar University's recognition as the most preferred institution of higher learning at the East African Employability Summit and Career Awards 2022-2023.

"With utmost humility and gratitude to God, I am honoured to have been awarded the Vice-Chancellor of the Year 2023 at the Uongozi Awards! Daystar University has been recognised as the most preferred institution of higher learning at the East African Employability Summit and Career Awards 2022-2023,” Ayiro stated.
