'Let's Nduthis': Disbelief, laughs after man requests Ksh.17K Boda Boda ride from Nairobi to Mombasa

What began as a routine request on a digital hailing app designed primarily for short, urban commutes transformed into a thirteen-hour highway odyssey spanning roughly 490 kilometres along Kenya’s busiest transport corridor.

The voyage commenced around 9am when motorcycle rider Job Njoroge accepted the unconventional booking through the ride-hailing app in Nairobi.

"I don't know what is wrong with me, but I love it," Parmarcore says during the journey.

Rather than navigating through localised traffic, the duo set off down the Nairobi-Mombasa highway, facing the gruelling physical demands of continuous travel on two wheels. 

Along the route, periodic app updates and video clips documented their progress through changing landscapes, showing intermediate checkpoints such as Mariakani where the meter had already crossed Ksh.7,790.

By the time they safely reached the coastal city of Mombasa around ten at night, the final fare displayed on the app reached an astounding Ksh.17,200.

Social media platforms immediately erupted into widespread disbelief and humour as footage and screenshots of the trip circulated widely.

Netizens expressed sheer amazement that a driver would willingly accept such an extreme route and that a passenger could endure thirteen straight hours in a motorcycle saddle. 

While many users praised both men for their remarkable stamina and audacity, others engaged in practical debates regarding the physical hazards, rider fatigue, fuel consumption logistics, and safety implications of taking a small motorcycle onto high-speed intercity highways.

The stunt highlighted the unexpected edge cases of algorithm-driven ride-hailing platforms.

Introduced in Kenya to help commuters bypass congested urban streets over short distances, Uber Boda was never structured or intended for long-haul interstate travel.

Yet, by testing the upper boundaries of app-based transport, the epic cross-country trip delivered an unforgettable viral moment that proved human determination - and a sturdy motorcycle - can stretch modern technology far past its intended purpose.
