President William Ruto has appointed Samuel Waweri Mwangi as the new Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) Board of Directors Chairperson.

The appointment, made under Section 43 (1) (a) of the Tourism Act, takes immediate effect and will last three years, beginning April 1, 2025.

The notice also confirmed the revocation of Irungu Nyakera's previous appointment, which has now ended.

The move signals a strategic shift in leadership at Kenya's premier convention facility, which is critical to the country's tourism and business sectors.

Nyakera was appointed to the position last year and pledged to make the venue a leading hub for conference tourism.

During his familiarization tour with CEO James Mwaura in August, Nyakera expressed his desire to strengthen KICC's role in Kenya's tourism industry and increase its competitiveness in the global Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) market.

Nyakera emphasised his commitment to maximising KICC's ability to host business events, which are one of the fastest-growing subsectors in global tourism.

He said his vision includes positioning KICC to compete with popular regional destinations such as Kigali, Rwanda, and Cape Town, South Africa.

In response to the gazette notice, Nyakera took to X to state; "I feel special to be fired through a special issue. They could not wait for Friday."
