KRA Commissioner General Humphrey Wattanga proceeds on terminal leave

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) Board has announced the exit of Commissioner General Humphrey Wattanga, who has proceeded on terminal leave effective immediately.

In an internal memorandum dated April 8, 2026, Board Chairman Ndiritu Muriithi said Wattanga left after the completion of his tenure.

He lauded the outgoing CG, saying he “played a key role in advancing KRA’s mandate” and was “instrumental in organisational restructuring reforms.”

“Board of Directors hereby communicates the exit of the Commissioner General, Mr Humphrey Wattanga, who has proceeded on terminal leave effective immediately,” stated Muriithi.

“The Board extends appreciation to Mr Wattanga for his contributions and wishes him well in his future endeavours.”

The Board has, in the interim, appointed Lillian Nyawanda, the Commissioner of Customs and Border Control, as acting Commissioner General pending the recruitment of a substantive office holder through a competitive process.

Wattanga was appointed by former Treasury Cabinet Secretary Prof. Njuguna Ndung'u in 2023 to serve in the position for a period of three years.

His appointment followed the resignation of former Commissioner General Githii Mburu, with the Board saying he had stepped aside "to pursue personal interests."
