National Basketball Women's Premier League defending champions Kenya Ports
Authority (KPA) whipped newcomers in the league Africa Nazarene University
(ANU) 78-26 at the Nyayo Gymnasium – Nairobi, in their third match of the
season on Sunday.
With the
Dockers seeking to defend the title, it was a one sided affair as ANU struggled
to contain the unbeaten champions.
New recruit
Jemima Knight Omondi was in class of her own scoring 18 points while Selina
Okumu and Rachael Wandago dropped 18 points combined as the Dockers cruised to
victory.
Ann
Wangui, Dersila Okode and Nicole Otieno were shining light for their team as
they dropped 24 points combined with each scoring 8 points.
The
visitors started on a high note winning first quarter 24-00 before another win
of 15-09 in the second quarter, establishing a huge lead of 39-09 into the
break.
KPA
carried on with their impressive display in the third quarter scoring 18-06
before winding up with a 21-11 win in the last quarter with the game ending
78-26 at the final buzzer.
KPA's
head coach Anthony Ojukwu was over the moon for the great display by his girls.
"Today
we were much flexible and serious compared to yesterday's match. It's a
learning process and we stuck to our game plan. We are in good shape and I can
admit that preseason really worked well for us," Ojukwu said.
On his
part, ANU's head coach Michael Oluoch blamed absence of key players for their
defeat.
"Most
of players aren't well, as you could see I only had six players today; despite
that my girls really played to their level best. We hope next match they will
be all fine," Olouch said.
In
another match Zetech University hammered JKUAT University 76-24.
Zetech
dominated all quarters winning 22-07, 20-07, 10-05 and 24-05 to take their
victory home.
