The Kenya National Bureau of Statistics is set to conduct
the country’s first-ever census on TVET institutions beginning Wednesday, May 20, 2026.
The exercise aims to collect critical data to support policy
formulation and planning in the technical training sector.
The census will capture the number of TVET institutions
across the country, student enrolment, staffing levels and the state of
infrastructure.
Speaking in Nakuru, Director General of the Kenya National
Bureau of Statistics, Macdonald George Obudho, said the findings will help the
government identify gaps in the sector and channel resources where they are
most needed.
He noted that the data will also help align training programmes with skills demanded in the job market.
"We need to look at what has worked and what has not worked
because it will tell us then how far we have gone in terms of TVET institutions,”
said Obudho.
“We have a new curriculum called CBET, which offers practical skills and this means that we require a lot of equipment and resources and therefore the data is going to give us the direction to take so that we offer competence training,” TVET Nakuru Regional Director Rosemary Kimani added.
