The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) has strongly condemned the assault of healthcare workers at Gertrude's Children's Hospital in Muthaiga, describing the incident as a disturbing example of the growing threat of workplace violence in Kenya's health sector.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, KMPDU Secretary General Dr.
Davji Atellah said the union had received reports that a paediatric dentist,
theatre staff and members of the nursing team were physically assaulted,
intimidated and subjected to violence by relatives of a minor patient on June
5, 2026.
He termed the actions "grossly unsettling" and
warned that attacks on healthcare workers undermine the delivery of quality
medical services.
"This incident is a disturbing reminder of the growing
threat of workplace violence against healthcare workers in Kenya. No healthcare
worker should be subjected to threats, abuse, or physical assault while
providing care to patients," said Dr. Atellah.
The KMPDU boss noted that violence against medical personnel
not only endangers staff but also compromises patient care, lowers morale and
creates unsafe environments within healthcare facilities.
He expressed solidarity with the affected workers and praised
them for maintaining professionalism despite the alleged aggression.
The doctors' union chief hence called on the National Police
Service (NPS), the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC),
and other relevant authorities to conduct swift investigations and ensure those
responsible are identified, arrested and prosecuted.
Dr. Atellah further insisted that there should be zero
tolerance for violence against healthcare workers.
He also urged the management of Gertrude's Children's Hospital
– Muthaiga Branch to fully cooperate with investigators by providing witness
accounts, relevant records and surveillance footage to aid the probe.
“Any attempt to suppress, conceal, sanitize, or otherwise
cover up the circumstances surrounding this incident would be unacceptable and
contrary to the interests of justice, accountability, and staff safety,” said
the KMPDU SG.
“Healthcare workers have a constitutional right to dignity,
security, and safe working conditions. KMPDU will continue to pursue
accountability for all acts of violence against healthcare workers and advocate
for stronger protections across the health sector.”
