The union announced the achievement on Thursday, November 5, 2026, describing the Fellowship as recognition of Dr. Mwachi's professional qualifications, surgical competence, ethical conduct and commitment to advancing surgical practice.
Founded in 1913, the American College of Surgeons is the world's largest organisation of surgeons, with admission to its Fellowship subject to an assessment of a surgeon's credentials, training, experience and professional standing.
Reacting to the recognition, Dr. Mwachi said the distinction reinforced his commitment to maintaining high standards in surgical practice and improving patient care.
"To me, FACS is not a badge of belonging. It is a vow, renewed with every incision, to practise surgery, both the science and the art, to the highest standard I can reach," he said.
The Fellowship recognises surgeons who demonstrate professional excellence and a commitment to advancing medical knowledge and healthcare standards.
KMPDU congratulated its chairman, describing his admission as a testament to his dedication to patient care and the pursuit of excellence in healthcare.
The recognition comes as the doctors' union prepares to conduct an independent audit of Mombasa County's free healthcare programme, dubbed Mwezi wa Baba.
The proposed audit will assess the programme's effectiveness and establish whether the healthcare services promised under the initiative are reaching the intended beneficiaries.
