Kitengela: Over 500 Boda Boda riders trained on responsible borrowing

The training was organised by Mogo Kenya in partnership with the Boda Boda Association of Kenya (BAK), and focused on helping riders manage their income, understand the full cost of asset financing, and stay on top of their loan repayments.

Riders were taken through budgeting and cash-flow management, how to understand loan agreements before signing, and what steps to take when they fall behind on payments. The training also encouraged riders to engage their financiers early, rather than waiting until missed payments trigger recovery action.

Speaking during the exercise, Mogo Kenya Manager for Kitengela Raphael Mulinge said financial literacy helps riders understand the terms of their loans, including the interest rates involved, which in turn improves repayment discipline.

"When a rider understands the interest rate they have been given and what they are required to repay, it becomes easier for them to manage their cash flow and keep up with their loan repayments," Mulinge said.

He added that the training is part of a nationwide programme by Mogo Kenya to educate riders on responsible borrowing, noting that default rates have continued to decline as a result of the ongoing financial literacy initiative.

Boda Kite Chairman Benard Rogito welcomed the partnership, saying it had brought riders free motorcycle services, oil top-ups, reflectors and helmets, all aimed at improving road safety standards among riders.

"Road safety begins with the rider. Having a reflector jacket and a helmet is what keeps you safe while you are riding," Rogito said.

Beyond the financial training, riders also benefited from free motorcycle oil services and reflectors, and took part in various sports activities, with winners feted at the event.
