Residents of Kisii town are calling on the county government to urgently address the long-standing drainage problem that causes flooding on the streets of the highland town whenever it rains.
According to residents, the town has been experiencing flooding due to poor and blocked drainage lines.
The town receives rainfall year-round due to its location within the Lake Victoria basin and the densely forested Kisii highlands.
Residents say blocked drainage lines due to poor garbage management, poorly designed water channels, and years of poor maintenance have turned the streets and some roads into ‘rivers’ whenever it rains.
Just recently, several roads were left submerged following heavy downpour, disrupting transport and forcing many businesses to close.
A number of businesses have suffered great losses.
Local trader Nelson Ombasa, who runs a clothing shop in the town centre, said the flooding has become a major cause of concern to businesses.
“Whenever it rains, dirty rainwater rushes through the market area and into our shops. Many customers cannot access the businesses in such conditions,” he said.
According office worker Declan Moseti, sidewalks and roads often become impassable during rains.
“It is not easy to move around the town especially if you don’t have a vehicle,” he said.
Residents now want the problem addressed.
“It is very frustrating for people and businesses because this area experiences rains almost all the time. It is frustrating that little has changed over the years,” said town resident Anne Nyakerario.
Residents are urging the authorities to upgrade the drainage system and clear blocked channels.
