The suspect, identified as Michael Ngure Maringa, was intercepted by detectives from Mwea East near Wang’uru Police Station after officers acted on a tip-off and pursued his vehicle until it could no longer proceed.
Confirming the incident, Mwea East Sub-County Police Commander Stephen Okal said the suspect, who resides in a rented house at Kimbimbi Shopping Centre, was apprehended while driving a Toyota Probox.
Police said Maringa was accompanied by a three-year-old boy at the time of his arrest. Officers contacted the child's mother, who later arrived and took custody of the minor.
During the operation, detectives recovered several items believed to have been used in livestock theft, including pliers, spanners, a torch, a face mask and a matchbox. They also found multiple sets of clothing, which investigators suspect the suspect may have used to change his appearance after committing the theft.
"We recovered pliers, a mask, spanners, a torch, a matchbox, among other items," Okal said.
Investigators further established that the vehicle was fitted with fake number plates and had a concealed engine number.
"We contacted the owner associated with the registration number, and he confirmed that he was in Nakuru with his vehicle," Okal said.
The arrest was welcomed by local residents, who have raised concerns over a rise in livestock theft in the area.
"We are spending sleepless nights because of livestock theft. With continued cooperation between the police and residents, we believe these incidents will come to an end. I am shocked that a Probox can transport more than two cows," said resident Gudson Wachira Muchina.
The suspect is being held at Wang’uru Police Station pending further investigations. Police also confirmed that they intervened after an angry crowd attempted to lynch him following his arrest.
