The display was part of a nationwide candle-lighting organised by the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) as the party began its October programme, dubbed “Mwezi wa Baba”, in honour of Raila.
Videos shared by the official ODM X account showed an illuminated image of Raila Odinga spinning around the iconic city landmark, as the name 'Baba Raila Odinga' proudly stood out at the building's top section.
The former Prime Minister's life story was also projected on the emblematic tower, as applauds could be heard from Kenyans gathered at the foot of the building.
The tribute at the KICC provided a striking conclusion to the day's events in Nairobi, which had earlier drawn Raila's supporters to Uhuru Park for a memorial gathering.
The commemorative events extended to several other parts of the country, with gatherings reported in Mombasa, Machakos, Kisii, Eldoret and Kisumu, among other areas.
In Mombasa, Raila's son, Raila Odinga Junior, attended a separate ceremony at Treasury Square, where he addressed mourners gathered to remember his father.
“Thank you for standing with our father Raila Odinga through the years. I have come here today to personally thank you,” he said.
ODM has dedicated the month of October to remembering Raila and his contribution to Kenya's political and public life, with further activities expected during the month.
The October activities will lead to further commemorations on October 15, when his family, political allies and supporters will mark one year since his death.
Raila died on October 15, 2025, aged 80, while receiving medical treatment in India.
Born in 1945 in Maseno, Kisumu County, Raila entered politics in the late 1970s and became a prominent figure in Kenya's struggle for multiparty democracy and political reform.
He was detained without trial for nearly eight years after the 1982 coup attempt and later rose through opposition politics, leading parties and coalitions including ODM, NASA and Azimio la Umoja.
Raila contested the presidency five times and served as Prime Minister from 2008 to 2013 in the coalition government formed after the disputed 2007 election and subsequent post-election violence.
