Kenya’s men and women hockey teams have intensified their
training at the City Park Hockey Stadium in Nairobi ahead of the 2025 Africa
Cup of Nations, scheduled for October 11–18 in Ismailia, Egypt.
The teams have been holding three sessions weekly, with the
focus squarely on sharpening tactics, fitness, and team cohesion.
The women’s team, under coach Meshack Senge is keen to
improve on their performance from the previous edition in 2022.
At the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations held in Ghana, the women’s
side clinched bronze, with hosts Ghana and eventual winners Egypt occupying the
top two spots while the men’s team finished fourth behind Nigeria, Egypt, and
champions South Africa.
The women's team striker Eleanor Chebet says both teams are
motivated to bounce back with stronger performances in Egypt.
“Last time, we bagged bronze. This year, we’re aiming for
the gold medal. We’re well-prepared and confident, although we know it won’t be
easy,” said Chebet.
Defender Lynne Tamunai echoed her teammate’s sentiments. “So
far, I can say the preparation have gone well. We've had impressive attendance,
and this is the largest training group I’ve seen so far.”
Men’s team coach Michael Malungu, who also guided Western
Jaguars to their historic maiden Premier League title last season, is
optimistic that a blend of seasoned players and promising young talent will
give Kenya an edge in the continental showpiece, which also serves as a
qualifier for the 2026 Hockey World Cup.
“We’ve instructed our players to continue working on their
individual technical skills at club level because that’s where they spend most
of their time. Our team training focuses on enhancing strength, agility, and
endurance, which are critical at the top level,” said Malungu.
