Ali Mohammed, the special envoy on Climate Change at the Office of the President of the Republic of Kenya, is now the new chair of the Africa Group of Negotiators (AGN).

He takes over from Ephraim Mwepya Shitima of Zambia who has served in the position for two years.

The announcement was made on Thursday, February 29, after electronic voting that had been taking place for two days.

Addressing journalists at the sixth session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA) which is taking place in Nairobi, Ali said expressed joy that the AGN leadership has now come to the Eastern Africa Region which comprises 14 African countries from Sudan, Eritrea to Mauritius Seychelles and Madagascar.

“We were three contestants, Kenya Tanzania and Rwanda and the majority of Eastern Countries have given the responsibility to Kenya. We are extremely honoured and grateful for the confidence of our permanent Secretary in the regional and we assure them of our full commitment to provide the required leadership,” said Ali.

He added that through his leadership, AGN will push for the implementation of various outcomes reached in different Conference of Parties including the just concluded one in Dubai last year.
