Kenya thrash South Africa in Youth Africa Hockey5s Cup opener

Captain Kevin Onyango was Kenya's standout player, leading from the front with a strong performance in both attack and defence.

South Africa started the match well and took the early lead, but Kenya responded quickly and took control of the game.

The Kenyan players led 5-2 at halftime before scoring four more goals in the second half to seal a comfortable victory.

The win comes after weeks of preparation, including a residential training camp ahead of the tournament.

Before the competition, head coach Kevin Lugalia said the team was ready despite facing strong opponents.

"We are aware we have tough opposition, but we are ready for the task ahead. Our expectation is to win the championship and qualify for the Under-18 World Cup," said Lugalia.

Captain Onyango had also said the team had worked on improving its scoring and defending during training, and those preparations were evident in the opening match.

Kenya will now shift focus to their next match as they continue their campaign for a place at the Under-18 Hockey5s World Cup.
