Kenya sends six to Uganda for Africa AirBadminton Championships

Badminton Kenya (BK) has dispatched six athletes to Entebbe, Uganda for the 2026 Africa AirBadminton Championships taking place from September 16–19 at Aero Beach.

Immediately following the continental event, the team will then compete in the Zone 5 Regional Championships from September 20–22.

Speaking on Wednesday from Nairobi, BK President Peter Muchiri emphasised the high stakes in Entebbe, as the continental tournament serves as a qualifier for the 2029 World Games in Karlsruhe, Germany.

“We have managed to send six of our best athletes, three ladies and men apiece to Entebbe,” said Muchiri.

“I know they will do good and qualify for the world games in Germany because with the support of the ministry of sports, we have prepared well,” added Muchiri.

The Kenyan delegation is guided by head coach Brijesh Jagdish Sonigra, a UK-trained tactician, alongside team manager John Mburu.

The men’s roster features Edwin Akwanyi, Sammy Sikoyo, and Calvin Simiyu, while Jacinta Sengera headlines the women’s team alongside Yvonne Mwikali and Blessing Buyanzi.

The six are among over 120 competitors representing 14 African nations, that already has defending champions Egypt, while hosts Uganda is also out to prove a point alongside Algeria, Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Comoros, Kenya, Mauritius, Nigeria, Rwanda, Tunisia, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
