Hunger is being experienced in several parts of Samburu County as the Kenya Red Cross distributes relief food to 500 families that have been affected by hunger in Samburu East.

Kenya Red Cross manager in charge of Upper eastern Maurice Anyango said expectant women and mothers below five years are the most affected by food shortages in different parts of Samburu County.

“The health of mothers and their children aged below five years has detreated after herders moved with livestock in search of pasture in far areas a situation that has led to an increase in malnutrition across the county he said.

Naisunyai village administrator Kupoti Lenakae said that drought has caused water dams to dry up forcing villages to walk more than 15kms in search of water.

Currently, more than 100,000 people in Samburu County are experiencing hunger and in need of food aid due to prolonged drought in some areas.

Each family benefitted by getting 10kgs of rice, 4kgs of beans, two litres of cooking oil and 500gs of salt.

Ms Padaso Leng’urde from Naisunyai said the food donation is not enough to meet the village’s food demand.

“We need more help because when we go home we will share this food with those who don’t have, we need the quantity of food and the number of beneficiaries to increase so that all of us can get food,” she appealed.
