The government has revealed that Kenya welcomed an estimated 7.9 million tourists in 2025, comprising 2.7 million international visitors and 5.2 million domestic travelers.

According to Tourism Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano, the sector generated approximately Ksh.0.5 trillion in total earnings, reaffirming its position as a key pillar of the national economy.

The 2025 Tourism Sector Performance Report showed that domestic travel continued to play a stabilising role, cushioning the industry against external shocks and seasonal fluctuations while maintaining steady demand throughout the year.

International arrivals rose from about 2.47 million in 2024 to 2.7 million in 2025, marking a growth rate of roughly 9 per cent, more than double the global average of 4 per cent.

Globally, tourist arrivals reached an estimated 1.52 billion in 2025, an increase of nearly 60 million compared to the previous year.

The report attributed Kenya’s above-average performance to improved destination marketing, enhanced tourism products, and recovery in key source markets, signalling growing global confidence in the country as a preferred travel destination.

Africa remained the leading source region, accounting for 47 per cent of international arrivals, followed by Europe at 25 per cent and the Americas at 14 per cent.

The trends point to strong regional travel and sustained long-haul demand, even as markets in Asia and Oceania present opportunities for further growth.

Leisure travel dominated arrivals at 46 per cent, followed by social visits at 20 per cent and business travel at 19 per cent, highlighting a diversified and resilient tourism portfolio.

The United States remained Kenya’s top source market, followed by Uganda, Tanzania and the United Kingdom, alongside emerging interest from India and China.

CS Miano said the government will continue to enhance the country’s competitiveness through sustained marketing under the Magical Kenya brand, alongside investments in infrastructure, innovation, sustainability, security and skills development.

She also cited improved connectivity, supportive policies and the introduction of the Electronic Travel Authorisation system as key drivers of growth, noting that collaboration with industry stakeholders will be critical in sustaining momentum.

"The Ministry expresses its profound appreciation to His Excellency President Dr. William Samoei Ruto for his steadfast leadership and policy support, which have been instrumental in the sector’s recovery and expansion," Miano stated.

"It also commends Kenyans for their warmth, entrepreneurship, and pride in delivering world-renowned hospitality, as well as international visitors for choosing Magical Kenya and supporting its conservation and cultural heritage."
