Kenya Pipeline Volleyball Club is set to retire the iconic jersey number 7 in honour of fallen legend Janet Wanja, who succumbed to a rare gallbladder cancer while receiving palliative care at her home in Nairobi last night.

The celebrated setter donned the shirt from 2005 to 2019, having switched from KCB in 2004.

In a statement, Kenya Pipeline Company Managing Director Joe Sang said the setter left an indelible mark in the club, where she won four Kenya National Volleyball League titles and several medals in ten African Club Championships she participated.

“Wanja was one of the best setters in the history of volleyball in Kenya and her presence on the court will be missed. In honour of Wanja, Kenya Pipeline Volleyball Club will retire her Iconic Jersey Number 7 from all future team engagements.”

“KPC extends its gratitude to the Kenya Volleyball Federation, the National Olympic Committee, Football Kenya Federation (FKF), and the Kenyan Sports Community for their emotional and moral support during this difficult time,” added Sang.

Kenya Pipeline Company also mourned Wanja as a leader and an immovable force on and off the court, and inspired a new generation of volleyballers.

“She was a mentor, teacher, and trainer whose spirit of resilience inspired and motivated a new generation of volleyballers.”

The 40-year-old celebrated setter, who also played for Malkia Striker from 2004 to 2019, was diagnosed with the rare cancer a few months ago, shortly after returning from the Paris Olympics, where she served as a trainer for the national team.
