Kenya will be pitching her case for a first gold medal in the women’s 10,000m finals on Monday from 1.3 pm when Sandrafelis Chebet , Stacy Ndiwa and Beatrice Mutai lead Kenya’s hopes against other stellar cast in what is expected to be a bruising battle bedecked by tack and endurance.

So far Kenya has bagged two bronze medals in the frame of African champion Samuel Gathimba(20km walking race) and  Edward Zakayo, in the men’s 5,000m final.

This figure is not impressive enough for a country revered globally for its athletics prowess.

Therefore, when the trio take to the track at lunch-hour in the 10,000m, they’ll be under the spotlight with an an expectant nation keenly following their performance.

The trio will be on the lookout of their competitors from Uganda who are challenging them just like their arch-rivals from Ethiopia who dethroned Kenya from the 5,000m.

Meanwhile, Kenya Police Service recruit Maximilia Imali and Verenica Mutua qualified for the 400m semi finals after clocking 51.74 seconds, and 52.70 respectively while their colleague Gladys Musyoki bowed out the race after clocking 53.41, finishing sixth in the second heat.

Kiprono Kosgei who made his debut in the 110m hurdles bowed out of the competition after clocking 15 seconds to   finish last in the first heat.

African champion Mathew Sawe got injured ranked 7th in group B after a jump of 2.15m. Sawe was hit in the ankle by the high jump bar forcing him to abandon the competition in his third try.

“ I feel sad that I had to quit the competitions due to an ankle injury. I was looking forward to improving my personal best which is 2.25m.This accidents do happen hence I shall focus on my recovery. After I get a clean bill of health I shall start preparing for the Africa Championships where I intend to defend my 2016 title,” said the soft spoken Kenya Defense Forces solider.
