Kenya and the U.S. state of California are strengthening cooperation in technology, climate innovation, and sustainable development, President William Ruto announced on Monday.

Speaking after hosting a delegation from California, the President highlighted the state’s position as the wealthiest in the United States and a key partner in fostering innovation, sustainability, and shared prosperity with Kenya.

“California’s leadership in technology and climate innovation, together with Kenya’s Silicon Savannah and our vibrant, young, and digitally skilled workforce, creates unmatched opportunities for collaboration,” Ruto said.

He noted that Kenya remains a continental leader in climate action, with 93% of its electricity sourced from renewable energy and plans to reach 100% by 2030, scaling up to 100 gigawatts by 2040.

The partnership is expected to accelerate initiatives in clean energy systems, smart agriculture, research, artificial intelligence, trade, and clean transportation.

Among the projects discussed is the Africa Clean Transportation Centre of Excellence, which will be established in Nairobi to advance sustainable mobility solutions.

The California delegation was led by State Secretary of Transportation Toks Omishakin, accompanied by other state officials and private sector representatives. The meeting also included U.S. Embassy Chargé d’Affaires Carla Benini.

Ruto termed the collaboration as a reflection of both Kenya’s and California’s commitment to green growth, innovation, and economic partnerships that benefit citizens in both regions.
