The Kenya Electricity Generating Company PLC (KenGen) has issued a public safety advisory warning communities living along the Seven Forks Cascade and downstream along the Tana River over rising water levels and a possible overflow.

In a statement on Saturday, KenGen said sustained high inflows from ongoing rainfall in the Mount Kenya and Aberdare Range catchments, as well as direct rainfall over reservoir areas, have led to increased water levels across the cascade.

The power producer noted that Masinga Dam is expected to reach full supply level, while Kiambere Dam remains elevated and under close monitoring.

“KenGen wishes to notify communities and stakeholders living along the Seven Forks Cascade and downstream along the Tana River that sustained high inflows resulting from rainfall in the Mount Kenya and Aberdare Range catchments, as well as direct rainfall over the reservoir areas, have led to rising water levels across the cascade,” KenGen stated.

“Masinga Dam is expected to reach Full Supply Level, while water levels at Kiambere Dam remain elevated and continue to be closely monitored.”

As a precaution, KenGen has urged residents in low-lying and flood-prone areas downstream to remain vigilant and take safety measures due to the risk of increased river flows.

Residents have been advised to consider relocating to safer ground in coordination with local authorities and to avoid activities near riverbanks.

“Avoid activities such as farming, fishing, grazing livestock, or crossing near riverbanks and areas along the Seven Forks Cascade,” read the statement.

They have also been urged to follow:

“Follow guidance and updates issued by local administration, disaster response agencies, and official communication channels.”

“Report emergencies or unusual river conditions to local authorities immediately.”

While urging the public to continue following official communication channels and report any emergencies, KenGen committed to liaising with relevant government agencies to provide necessary updates that ensure public safety.
