Kibet, currently the company’s General Manager for Commercial Services, will succeed Peter Waweru Njenga upon his retirement.
In a statement announcing the appointment, KenGen’s board said Kibet had been selected following a competitive recruitment process. The period before he takes office will allow for a handover.
Kibet oversees energy markets, investments, new business and partnerships, marketing and corporate communication, and sustainability.
According to the board, he has more than 17 years of professional experience spanning geothermal development, project delivery, commercial strategy and business growth.
The company credited him with contributing to renewable energy development, the expansion of its international consultancy services and the advancement of the Olkaria Green Energy Park.
Kibet holds a bachelor’s degree in Telecommunication and Information Engineering and a master’s degree in Project Management, both from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology.
He is also a certified Project Management Professional and SAP Project System Consultant, and has completed an organisational leadership programme at Harvard Business School.
Njenga’s appointment as KenGen CEO was announced in August 2023. He previously served as General Manager for Infrastructure Development at Kenya Power, while Abraham Serem had been leading KenGen in an acting capacity.
In its announcement, the board cited KenGen’s Ksh.10.48 billion profit after tax for the 2025 financial year and the expansion of its geothermal consultancy work, including assignments in Eswatini, among developments during Njenga’s tenure.
