Kathungi Secondary School of Kitui County defended their Highland boy’s Airtel Rising Stars football title to be the region’s flag bearers at the nationals to be held in Kisumu.

Kathungi pipped Isiolo Boys 1-0 in the finals played on Saturday at Kitui High school with the losing finalists joining the champions in the nationals.

The only goal was scored in the 45th minute by Mohamed ‘Neymar’ Khamis for his 14th of the tournament with the winners saying injuries and a bumpy pitch stopped them from getting more.

“We will better our performance at the nationals and we are happy despite our team being weakened,” Kathungi captain, James Mutua, stated.

Team coach cum Principal Mr. Malombe lauded his team’s efforts, insisting that they are prepared to win the trophy despite several hardships.

Kathungi represented Kenya at the East African Secondary School Championships in      Lira, Uganda in 2013 and have since made the nationals.
