Kakamega High, St. Mary’s Yala set for 'Mini-Mashemeji Derby' national final

The Green Commandos set up a mouthwatering "mini-Mashemeji derby" final against Nyanza regional powerhouse St. Mary’s School, Yala, who ended Takaba’s national fairytale run with a 2-0 victory in the other semi-final.

Kakamega, the 12-time national champions, started on the front foot and thought they had taken the lead in the 18th minute when Daniel Ombati slotted home, only for the strike to be ruled out for offside.

The record holders continued to press and finally broke the deadlock in the 29th minute when Julius Ochieng unleashed a thunderous strike from outside the 18-yard box into the back of the net.

Menengai came back rejuvenated in the second half, taking the game to the champions. Their resilience paid off when Abdi Rashid equalized with a brilliant set-piece.

The Knights then maintained a disciplined defensive shape to thwart Kakamega's attacks, forcing the match into extra time.

The Green Commandos regained their composure in the extra period, securing the victory when Julius Mulwa pounced on a rebound from his initial shot to head home the decisive goal.

"I am happy with the win. The game was tough, but the boys pushed harder for the final slot," said Kakamega head coach Enoch Lucheveli. "We are confident we can reclaim our title after seven years in the cold, but we have to learn to bury our chances and improve in the final."

In the second semi-final, St. Mary's Yala broke down Takaba's stubborn resistance after a goalless first half. Enock Mwaganda finally opened the scoring in the 67th minute, before Arnold Odira added a second five minutes later to seal Yala's spot in Thursday's showcase match.

Volleyball contest

The national volleyball championship also delivered high drama, guaranteeing a new champion in the girls' category.

Kesogon dethroned bitter rivals Kwanthanze in straight sets to book their final ticket, where they will meet Soweto Academy. Soweto stormed into their first-ever national final by overcoming St. Martha Mwitoti 3-1.

In the boys' category, both Chepsaita and Chesamis delivered dominant whitewash performances against Matiliku and Masara respectively, setting up a final where both sides will be hunting for their maiden national title.
