Investigations as detainee allegedly dies by suicide in Siaya

Police are investigating an incident where a detainee allegedly died by suicide in Gem Yala, Siaya County.

The body of the 40-year-old suspect was found in a cell at Ramula police post.

The deceased, who has been identified as Fredrick Odhiambo Ochieng’, had been arrested after he failed to honor court summons.

Uranga sub location Assistant Chief Vitalis Otunga said the man died twenty minutes after his arrest.

“He was found dead twenty minutes after he was taken in. A police vehicle was set to ferry him to Yala police station,” Otunga said.    

Odhiambo had an active assault case at the Siaya law courts. He however went into hiding.

“His mother was then arrested in efforts to fish the suspect out of his hideout,” the authorities added.

Upon realizing that his mother had been locked up, the suspect’s brothers informed the police of his whereabouts.

The body of the suspect was removed to Yala sub county hospital mortuary.
