The government has warned boda boda operators against
allowing themselves to be used by politicians and criminal groups to perpetrate
violence and disrupt public order, saying those involved will face legal
consequences.
Speaking during a consultative meeting with boda boda
operators and sector leaders in Vihiga County on Friday, Internal Security and
National Administration Principal Secretary Dr. Raymond Omollo said the
government would not tolerate goonism, hooliganism or politically instigated
violence.
Dr. Omollo said that while the boda boda sector remains one
of Kenya's key economic drivers, a small number of rogue operators had damaged
its reputation by engaging in criminal activities and acts of violence.
He urged riders to reject attempts by politicians to
exploit unemployed youth by recruiting them to intimidate opponents, destroy
property or cause chaos during political activities.
"No political interest is worth risking your life,
your livelihood or your future. If there is a leader you support, support them
peacefully. If there is a leader you do not support, continue with your work
and your daily activities. Do not allow yourself to be used to commit acts of
violence," Dr. Omollo said.
The PS described the majority of boda boda operators as
hardworking and law-abiding citizens who provide essential last-mile transport
services connecting communities to markets, schools and health facilities.
He called on sector leaders to strengthen collaboration with
security agencies, chiefs, assistant chiefs and National Government
Administrative Officers to identify and isolate criminal elements infiltrating
the industry.
According to Dr. Omollo, closer cooperation between riders
and security agencies would help curb crime while safeguarding the reputation
of the sector.
He also commended boda boda operators for supporting
security efforts through information sharing and community vigilance, noting
that their widespread presence across villages and trading centres makes them
valuable partners in maintaining public safety.
Dr. Omollo further encouraged operators to take advantage
of government programmes aimed at improving livelihoods, including registration
under the Social Health Authority (SHA), investments in education and
infrastructure, as well as initiatives to modernise the sector.
He said the government was promoting electric motorcycles
and affordable financing models to lower operating costs and boost riders'
earnings, adding that sustainable development can only be achieved in an
environment of peace and security.
