The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission  (IEBC) has officially cleared former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko to vie for the position of Mombasa Governor.

This comes after the High Court in Mombasa on Wednesday quashed an earlier decision by the electoral commission to disqualify Sonko from vying for the Mombasa Governor seat on grounds that he had been impeached from office.

A three-judge bench in Mombasa ruled that Sonko has an appeal pending at the Supreme Court and has not exhausted his options for contesting his impeachment.

The court directed that the commission accepts Sonko's documents and clear him to vie for the Mombasa Governor seat

Sonko was handed the nomination certificate on Thursday after submitting his documents to the Mombasa County Returning Officer.

Chebukati on Wednesday indicated that the commission was not keen on appealing the High Court ruling allowing Sonko to vie since the electoral body is currently facing serious time constraints in regards to the printing of ballot papers.
