I resigned from my job to cook online – Trevor Were

Also known as Saute with Trevor, Were's culinary skills have made him a star, earning him rich online discipleship in Kenya and abroad.

“I started cooking when I was a child. My mother used to tell me that I would need the skill once I moved out, and had no wife," he says.

According to Trevor, the first meal he learnt how to prepare was tea and rice, his mother taught him pastry.

“My dad was the master when it came to cuisines and preparing various meats,” said Trevor.

Trevor’s studied Mass Media but worked as a sales marketer from 2019 and resigned in 2025. But what led to him leaving his job and pursuing his passion in cooking?

In 2022 he discovered TikTok, for him it was just a dancing app and he even tried motivation talks which failed.

“I guess I was just chasing fame and hadn’t discovered my niche,” he says.

One moment when he was trying to figure out what kind of content he wanted to do, he remembered he could cook, and cook he did.

Trevor created his first cooking video and it went viral in just a few hours.

In 2025, he resigned from his job to focus on creating cooking content.

“It’s not easy. Don’t be deceived that we are making millions from this thing, if you want to be depressed, then do it for money,” cautions Trevor.

In 2026 Trevor was named among the top food content creators on TikTok Global Discover List -- and he got to represent Kenya on a global platform at the Network’s Kitchen in New York City.
