Africa’s youthful population, growing digital access, and deep sporting culture are positioning the continent as a natural home for the rise of phygital sport.

According to Dan Merkley, Chairperson and Managing Director of the World Phygital Community (WPC), the continent already reflects the behavior that phygital competition formalizes. Phygital sport blends digital gaming and physical competition, with athletes competing in both stages and the combined results determining the winner.

In disciplines such as Phygital Football, players first face off on a console before immediately taking the contest onto a real pitch. Performance in both formats counts equally, demanding athletes who can adapt between digital strategy and physical execution.

Africa’s involvement in the movement is already significant. The continent currently hosts 34 WPC member organizations, nearly a quarter of the global membership. Interest continues to grow, with a city in South Africa submitting a bid to host the Games of the Future in 2027, a global tournament that showcases phygital disciplines.

Merkley believes Africa’s appeal lies in its natural overlap between gaming and traditional sport. In countries such as Kenya, Nigeria, Ghana and Cameroon, it is common to see young people play football on a console before heading out to a local pitch for a real match.

Another key advantage is accessibility. Phygital competitions do not require expensive infrastructure. Community fields, basketball courts, halls, a gaming console and a screen are often enough to host events, making it easier for schools, clubs and local organisers to introduce the format.

While elite competitions generate headlines, the long-term growth of phygital sport will depend on grassroots development. Schools, universities and community clubs are expected to form the foundation of the ecosystem, creating a pathway from local tournaments to international competition.

With its young population and expanding digital landscape, Africa is not simply adopting the trend. It is increasingly becoming central to phygital sport’s global future.
