The Africa UAE Business Summit recently brought together experts and entrepreneurs to discuss the opportunities and challenges of doing business in Africa and the UAE in a four-part virtual webinar that started yesterday on 14th March 2024.

The summit highlighted the importance of understanding local markets and cultures to succeed in these regions.

"One of the biggest mistakes that a lot of companies make is thinking this is Africa. Africa is not one country; it's a continent with 3,000 tribes and 54 countries. It's a huge cosmopolitan collection of people.”

“Market segmentation is critical. Don't come in and think Africa is one generic group. This is a very huge population, very segmented, not just in terms of culture but also languages and regions," said Boni Nyaga, CEO Mawaitha Africa and a moderator at the summit.

William Stenhouse, the founder and CEO of UAE Africa Networking Group, emphasized the need for a tailored approach when entering African markets.

"UAE Africa Networking Group has been connecting the continent since 2016, with over 14,000 members from 66 different countries. Look at the UAE as 200 plus new markets that you're currently not in. We support SMEs to connect with Canada, Europe, and beyond. Markets are highly segmented; don't look at Africa as one generic group," said Stenhouse.

Adarsh, a business advisor from Ras Al Khaimah Economic Zone, highlighted the opportunities in Ras Al Khaimah for entrepreneurs.

"Ras Al Khaimah is an up-and-coming emirate with opportunities in tourism, adventure, nature, and more. Dubai was 15 years ago what Ras Al Khaimah is now. It's time to buy in Ras Al Khaimah, not just rent. It's a cost-effective location with a strategic location for import and export," said Adarsh.

The summit also highlighted the growing opportunities for SMEs in Africa, where 88% of businesses are SMEs. With over 44 million SMEs in Sub-Saharan Africa alone, there is a vast market waiting to be tapped.

The rise of venture capital funding in countries like Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa, Tanzania, and Egypt further underscores the potential for growth and investment in African markets.

In terms of doing business in the UAE, speakers highlighted the advantages of setting up in Ras Al Khaimah, one of the seven emirates of the UAE. Known for its strategic location and low costs, Ras Al Khaimah offers opportunities in tourism, hospitality, real estate, trade, logistics, fintech, retail, e-commerce, and technology.

Entrepreneurs were encouraged to take advantage of the UAE's business-friendly environment, which allows for easy company setup and provides lifetime visas for business owners.

The summit emphasized the need for African entrepreneurs to explore partnerships and opportunities in the UAE, leveraging its unique position as a gateway to the Middle East and beyond.

The Africa UAE Business Summit gave useful information about the opportunities and challenges of doing business in Africa and the UAE. Kenyan and African entrepreneurs can tap into these dynamic regions by learning about local markets, adjusting their strategies, and building partnerships.
