The Nairobi High Court on Thursday dismissed an appeal by five former Homa Bay County Assembly officials against a Ksh.59 million fine imposed on them or a 6-year jail term.

Dismissing the appeal filed by the five former county officials for lack of merit, Judge Esther Maina said that the trial court had properly found the accused guilty of embezzling Ksh.27.8 million by fraudulently authorizing payments for trips and activities that never took place.

The five are former County Assembly Clerk Kephas Otieno, former principal finance officer Caroline Sang, Maurice Amek who formerly served as the principal accountant , former Homa Bay County Assembly Majority Leader Michael Ooro and former Minority Leader Isaac Nyandege.

The 5 had been found guilty in June this year of 10 counts including conspiracy to commit corruption, unlawful acquisition of public property, and abuse of office among others.
