A section of Harambee Stars players has pledged to invest part of their African Nations Championship (CHAN) earnings into the government’s Affordable Housing Programme.

The players, led by CHAN captain and Kenya Police FC left-back Aboud Omar, said they are ready to invest KSh 1 million each, in line with an agreement reached with President William Ruto after the conclusion of the continental tournament in August 2025.

Speaking during a visit to an affordable housing project in Starehe, alongside national teammates including Mike Kibwage and Sylvester Owino, Omar urged the government to expedite the processing of documentation to facilitate the investment.

“We know you are busy, but this is just a reminder. The boys are ready and we are waiting. We have been told that the houses will be ready for occupation by the end of December, so our plea is for the paperwork to be completed as soon as possible,” said Omar.

Omar noted that the location and accessibility of the housing units played a key role in motivating the players to commit to the project.

“You gave us a promise on affordable housing, and today we have seen that the promise is coming true. We have toured the houses and we are very happy. Most of the players have agreed to place deposits for units here in Starehe,” he added.

The players were taken on a tour of the housing units, including those nearing completion.

Under the arrangement, both players and members of the technical bench are required to deposit KSh 1 million each for two-bedroom units under the affordable housing scheme, with the government matching the amount with an additional KSh 1 million.

During the CHAN tournament, President Ruto pledged KSh 1 million to each player for every win and KSh 500,000 for every draw in the group stage. For the final group match against Zambia, the incentive was increased to KSh 2.5 million per player.

In total, each player reportedly earned KSh 5 million. This followed victories over the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Zambia and Morocco, which each earned players KSh 1 million, as well as draws against Angola and Madagascar in regulation time, which came with a KSh 500,000 bonus per player.

The tournament marked Kenya’s debut appearance at CHAN, which the country co-hosted alongside Uganda and Tanzania.
