The University of Kabianga has confirmed that an unknown number of students were injured after part of the finishing on an upper floor slab came off, sparking panic and a stampede.

In a statement, Vice Chancellor Prof Eric Koech said the injured students were receiving treatment at Kericho County Referral Hospital, but did not disclose the number of those hurt

Sources within the institution said the incident occurred as students attended lectures on the third floor of the four-storey theatre.

The sources said debris from the upper floor slab finishing fell onto the third-floor slab, alarming students who rushed for exits amid fears the building was collapsing.

In the ensuing stampede, some students reportedly jumped from the third and other lower floors to the ground, sustaining fractures and other injuries.

The injured were rushed to Kericho County Referral Hospital and other health facilities in the county for treatment.
