The Harambee Starlets thrilled home fans on Saturday with a commanding
2-0 victory over India women's national football team in the FIFA Series at
Nyayo National Stadium, setting up a mouthwatering final against Australia women's
national football team.
Kenya made a dream start, taking the lead inside just two
minutes. Fasila Odhiambo delivered a teasing cross that was fumbled by the
Indian goalkeeper, allowing Martha Amunyolete to pounce on the rebound and fire
into the bottom corner.
Buoyed by the early breakthrough, the Starlets seized
control of the game, dictating play and pushing forward with intent. Their
dominance nearly paid off again in the 37th minute when Elizabeth Ochaka rose
highest from a corner, only to see her header drift narrowly wide.
After a confident first-half display, Kenya returned from
the break determined to seal the result- and their place in the final. The hosts
continued to press, with long-range efforts testing the Indian defence.
Their persistence paid off in the 58th minute when Tereza
Engesha was played through on goal and calmly slotted past the keeper to double
Kenya’s advantage.
Engesha nearly grabbed a second moments later after another
error from the Indian goalkeeper, but her attempt went wide. Kenya remained on
the front foot, with Valerie Nekesa coming close to adding a third in the 75th
minute, her curling effort rattling the crossbar after a high press forced a
turnover.
The Starlets managed the closing stages with composure,
sealing a deserved 2-0 win built on cohesion, intensity, and attacking intent.
The victory sets up a high-profile final against a
formidable Australian side led by Sam Kerr, who cruised past Malawi women's
national football team 5-0 earlier in the day.
