The event marked a significant milestone in the government’s resettlement efforts following the tragedy, which left scores homeless after a dam burst swept through parts of the area. The affected homeowners received land parcels and formal ownership documents, offering them a pathway to rebuild their lives with greater security.
Addressing residents during the ceremony, Prof. Kindiki said the government would also allocate land to 56 families who had been renting houses destroyed in the floods. He affirmed that both homeowners and tenants affected by the disaster would benefit from the resettlement programme.
In addition to land allocation, each family is set to receive KSh20,000 as part of immediate financial support to help them restart their lives.
The Deputy President said the Ministry of Lands had been directed to expedite the processing and issuance of the remaining documentation to ensure a smooth transition for beneficiaries.
The April 2024 floods, triggered by heavy rainfall and a dam failure, caused widespread destruction in Maai Mahiu and surrounding areas, prompting national mourning and renewed scrutiny over dam safety and land use practices.
Beyond compensation, the Deputy President highlighted ongoing development initiatives in the region. He said the expansion of the Rironi–Mau Summit highway is progressing as planned and is expected to enhance road safety and stimulate economic growth along the corridor.
He further announced that construction of the Maai Mahiu Modern Market will commence within a week, with a contractor expected on site shortly. The project, alongside affordable housing developments, is intended to create employment opportunities for local youth.
Prof. Kindiki pointed to government-backed youth empowerment programmes, including NYOTA, Kazi Mtandaoni and Kazi Majuu, describing them as key avenues for job creation and income generation.
He also pledged to address infrastructure concerns raised by local sand harvesters, confirming that a transformer would be delivered to improve electricity supply in the area. Additionally, the government will support the acquisition of 100 acres of land in Kedong to facilitate their operations.
