Founded in Ghana in 2018 by entrepreneur Basil David Anthony, the company has established operations in Dubai and is now using Kenya as its entry point into the region.
Modern Floors & Walls will initially offer products including SPC flooring, SPC wall panels, carpet tiles and other interior-finishing solutions, alongside installation and after-sales services.
Anthony said the company chose to establish its presence in Kenya as part of a phased approach to regional expansion, with plans to first develop local operations and partnerships before moving into other East African markets.
“We started by building the business in Ghana, but the vision was never to remain in one market,” Anthony said. “Establishing our company in Dubai gave us an international platform from which we could strengthen procurement, sourcing and our relationships with manufacturers. Kenya is now the next important step in that journey.”
The company plans to work with Kenyan installers, contractors, architects, interior designers and property developers as it develops its local operations.
Anthony said the company would focus on understanding the Kenyan market and adapting its operations to local conditions rather than treating East Africa as a single market.
“Africa is a massive market, but you cannot build an African company by looking at Africa as one market,” he said. “Every country is different. Our approach is to enter, learn, localise and build.”
The Kenyan expansion follows the establishment of BASIL MODERN FLOORS AND WALLS L.L.C in Dubai in December 2022. The UAE operation serves as a procurement, sourcing and supply hub for the group's international operations and relationships with manufacturers.
The company says its longer-term ambition is to establish a presence in multiple African markets, with Kenya expected to provide a base for its expansion into East Africa.
