DCP party leader Rigathi Gachagua has declared he will be a presidential candidate under the United Alternative Government, saying his bid will not split the opposition as leaders will eventually agree on a single flagbearer to face President William Ruto.

Speaking during a church service at PCEA Ilasit in Kajiado South, Kajiado County, the former Deputy President said opposition figures are currently building credibility and popularity but will unite behind one candidate after nominations.

He said he would support whoever emerges as the coalition’s candidate.

Gachagua also took issue with recent attacks on former President Uhuru Kenyatta by Kenya Kwanza leaders, urging them to respect the retired Head of State.

He said Uhuru has a constitutional right to freedom of expression and association and defended his record in office.

Gachagua further criticised the President over what he termed the involvement of ODM Cabinet Secretaries in partisan politics, warning that it is wrong for public officers to engage in party activities.

He also accused Ruto of attempting to weaken ODM, arguing that strong political parties are essential for democracy.

On development, Gachagua promised to push for completion of stalled projects, including the Ilasit–Taveta road, and accused the President of initiating the road project for “selfish interests”.

Gachagua is in Kajiado for a three-day tour seeking support from the Maa community.
