Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has called on journalists to uphold responsible and objective reporting as Kenya marks World Press Freedom Day.

In a statement shared on Saturday, Gachagua said the day’s theme — “Shaping a future at peace; promoting press freedom for human rights, development and security” — highlights the role of journalism in informing and educating the public.

He said he joined the world in celebrating members of the media “who sacrifice their time and risk their lives” to tell stories, save lives and protect the environment.

Gachagua also said press freedom in Kenya has come “a long way”, urging journalists not to “let the guard down”, especially as the country heads to the 2027 General Election.

He said press freedom comes with responsibility and objectivity, adding that a free press is central to democracy
