Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi
Gachagua has declared his quest to seek the presidential ticket by opposition
outfit United Alternative Government.
According to the former deputy president, he is a suitable match
to oust President William Ruto in 2027.
“DCP people have told me to contest for the Presidency, I am there….
But my candidacy will not divide the opposition,” Gachagua said in a church
service on Sunday.
Gachagua, the former Deputy President, has noted that although
various opposition candidates are vying for the presidency and trying to build their individual popularity, they will ultimately agree on a single candidate
to challenge President Ruto.
“We
will sit together and agree to have one candidate who will deal with William
Ruto in the next election.
He
further assured that he would support whichever candidate emerges
victorious in the presidential nominations.
“Rigathi
Gachagua cannot be the dividing factor in the quest for one candidate. I have
hopes, and I pray they nominate me. I am suitable…If they choose another, I will
support them,” he said.
“Our quest to have a single presidential candidate stands. The
fact that we have declared candidacy individually does not undermine that
objective.”
Gachagua made these remarks during a church service at PCEA
Illasit Church in Kajiado South, Kajiado County.
Regarding the recent attacks on former President Uhuru Kenyatta
by Kenya Kwanza leaders, Gachagua has urged them to leave the retired President
alone, emphasizing that he deserves respect.
He has reiterated that Uhuru Kenyatta has a constitutional right
to freedom of expression and association, and praised his tenure, stating that
he did a commendable job—something he claims the current leadership has failed
to do.
Gachagua also criticised President Ruto for appointing some ODM cabinet secretaries to the Central Management Committee, describing it as inappropriate for public officers to engage in partisan politics.
He
has warned that President Ruto is on the verge of weakening ODM, stressing that
strong political parties are vital for democracy and should be protected.
Gachagua is on a three-day charm offensive in Kajiado County,
aiming to garner support from the Maa community.
