Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has criticised the government’s handling of President William Ruto’s security, saying the Head of State’s safety is critical to national stability even as the opposition seeks to remove him through the ballot.

Speaking during a press briefing on Sunday, Gachagua said he had avoided discussing security matters publicly because of the potential risk of endangering the President, but insisted leaders opposed to Ruto want him defeated “through the ballot, not any other method.”

“His security and wellbeing is a very important ingredient of our political stability… He must be safe,” Gachagua said, warning that any harm to the President would trigger a crisis “of great magnitude.”

Gachagua took aim at Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen, describing him as “naive, childish and juvenile,” and claimed the ministry requires leadership that is mature and not politically ambitious.

He alleged that security chiefs struggle to brief Murkomen and accused the government of failing to act decisively, claiming the CS and the Inspector General should have resigned following the security incident.

Gachagua also raised concerns about the Presidential Escort Unit, alleging it is demoralised, “ethnicised” and affected by corruption, including claims about unpaid allowances and alleged demands for a share of officers’ allowances.

He called for officers attached to the presidential unit to be paid their dues and urged the President to “allow professionals” to serve him.

Gachagua further dismissed UDA Secretary General Hassan Omar’s apology over his earlier remarks, claiming the statements were discussed at State House in Mombasa and reflected a coordinated script.

He accused President Ruto of reviving divisive politics and urged electoral officials to ensure the integrity of the 2027 General Election, warning against attempts to “steal elections.”

Gachagua also challenged the President to assure Kenyans he would accept the outcome of the next election and avoid incitement.
