Eleven people, including a former Permanent Secretary in Machakos County's Ministry of Local Government, will face charges in a corruption case involving the alleged irregular acquisition of cemetery land in Mavoko, Machakos County, valued at Ksh.283.2 million.

According to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), Senior Principal Magistrate Celesa Okore of the Milimani Anti-Corruption Court ruled that the prosecution had established a case requiring the accused persons to defend themselves.

The case involves alleged offences including conspiracy to commit corruption, fraudulent acquisition of public property, fraudulent disposal of public property and fraudulent practices in procurement proceedings.

The accused persons include former Permanent Secretary Sammy Kirui and 10 others.

The ODPP said the case has been prosecuted over the years by Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions Christine Gakobo and Principal Prosecution Counsel Samita Mang’oli.

The defence hearing is scheduled to begin on January 25, 2027.
