The resolution followed a meeting of the top tier league chairpersons last Tuesday in Nairobi, which was also attended by the FKF President Hussein Mohammed, as the plan to revert to an independent body running the FKF Premier League gained momentum.
According to a joint press statement issued by the League Chairmen’s Council on Thursday, the stakeholders resolved to pursue structural, administrative, and governance reforms aimed at elevating the league into a more competitive and commercially sustainable competition.
At the heart of the discussions was the growing push for independence in league management. Clubs reportedly maintained a firm stance against participating in a league operated solely under federation control, arguing that a more autonomous structure would enhance professionalism, transparency, and commercial growth.
“The Chairmen of the Premier League clubs wish to place on record their commitment to the shared vision of a professionally managed and competitive Kenyan Premier League and call upon all stakeholders to support this transformative process.”
To bridge the transition period, the parties agreed to establish an interim committee composed of representatives from the clubs, FKF, and commercial stakeholders, including broadcasting and sponsorship partners.
The body will oversee league operations while guiding the transition toward a fully independent legal entity.
The proposed model will reportedly see all 18 top-flight clubs become shareholders in the new league management company, a move expected to give clubs a stronger voice in governance and revenue decisions.
They also noted that the transition process would remain compliant with the FKF Constitution and relevant football governance statutes.
The committee is expected to focus on financial accountability, stakeholder inclusivity, league competitiveness, and long-term commercial sustainability as it develops the new framework.
The operational mandate of the defunct Kenyan Premier League (KPL) Limited to run the country's top-tier football league came to an end in September 2020 when the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) declined to renew their contract.
The top-flight competition operates as the FKF Premier League under the direct control of the federation.
