The world
football governing body, FIFA, has dismissed the suspension of Football Kenya
Federation (FKF) President Hussein Mohammed, acting General Secretary Dennis
Gicheru, and National Executive Committee (NEC) member Abdulahi Yusuf Ibrahim,
ruling the action as unconstitutional.
In a letter
dated May 25 2026 and signed by FIFA's Chief Member Associations Officer Elkhan
Mammadov, the world football governing body made their point known, warning
that it would not hesitate to take action on members who violate the FKF
Constitution.
According to
FIFA, the suspension process did not comply with Article 41 of the FKF
Constitution, which strictly governs how officials can be provisionally
dismissed or suspended.
“Under Article
41, any suspension must be properly proposed, placed on the agenda,
communicated to NEC members, meet quorum and voting requirements, and give the
affected official a fair chance to be heard,” Mammadov said.
On April 24,
nine out of 14 NEC members voted to oust Mohamed, citing alleged
misappropriation of a Ksh42.4 million insurance tender connected to the African
Nations Championship (CHAN) tournament that was co-hosted with the neighbouring
Uganda and Tanzania in 2025.
At the time, the
NEC alleged that the lucrative contract was awarded to a company described as
“unlicensed”, “unvetted”, and one that had failed to submit its tax returns,
despite better offers being available.
The FKF NEC, led
by estranged deputy president McDonald Mariga has since acknowledged receipt of
the Fifa communication promising to abide.
