Family demands justice after bodaboda rider dies following police lorry hit-and-run in Nyandarua

A family from Nairobi Ridge village in Kipipiri, Nyandarua County, has called on the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to investigate the conduct of a police driver accused of hitting a bodaboda rider and dumping him at a hospital without following up on his treatment.

Samuel Thenya, 27, died at North Kinangop Catholic Hospital in Kinangop on Saturday, days after he was involved in the accident.

His mother, Anne Thenya, said the incident occurred at the Jua Kali area in Ol Kalou town along the Gilgil-Nyahururu highway, when a speeding police lorry hit her son.

She said police officers rushed Thenya to JM Kariuki Hospital in Ol Kalou immediately after the accident, but left him there without ensuring he received adequate attention. He was later referred to North Kinangop Catholic Hospital, where he was admitted to the intensive care unit until his death.

Family members have accused the police of negligence, saying that beyond rushing Thenya to hospital, officers had a duty to follow up on his condition and ensure he was properly attended to.

They are now pushing for IPOA and human rights organisations to intervene, demanding accountability for what they term a case of police negligence that cost their son his life.
