Ex-Nairobi Governor Anne Kananu joins Sonko's NEDP as she eyes Maara MP seat

Kananu was received into the party by NEDP leader and former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko, who said her entry adds to the party's growing presence as political realignments begin to gather momentum.

According to the party, Kananu intends to contest the Maara Constituency parliamentary seat on the NEDP ticket, subject to the party's nomination process.

Her move signals a return to elective politics after serving as Nairobi Governor following the impeachment of Sonko in 2021.

In welcoming her, Sonko said the party is focused on advancing policies aimed at addressing poverty, improving infrastructure, creating employment opportunities, expanding access to education and clean water, and improving livelihoods.

However, he emphasized that Kananu's admission into the party does not guarantee her a direct nomination for the parliamentary seat.

Sonko said all aspirants seeking to contest on the NEDP ticket will be required to participate in competitive party primaries, regardless of their political profile or previous positions.

"Joining NEDP does not guarantee a direct party nomination. Every aspirant must go to the ground, earn the support of the people and compete fairly in our party primaries. NEDP believes in free, fair and democratic nominations," he said.

Kananu's defection comes as political parties continue to recruit new members and position potential candidates ahead of the 2027 General Election.
